Last week I shared my DIY Skort inspiration. I absolutely adore the infamous skort that Zara (similar here) came up with spring/summer season and snatched a pair as soon as I got a the chance. I wish I could stack them up in my closet in every colour and print, unfortunately the selection is slim to none. Therefore, I decided to DIY a pair by using a floral silk scarf I bought from H&M for $12.95 months ago (I was determined to use it for a DIY project!). I love the result of it! The beauty is, you can pretty much use any fabric you have for this project and I also used an existing pair of shorts that I found were a little tad short as the base for this.
Give this a try and share with me!
- A large squared silk scarf
- A pair of shorts (preferably with a side or back zipper/closure)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
1. First, lay the shorts flat on the surface and position your scarf with one corner pointing down on one side of the shorts as shown in the picture below (this is creating the bottom layer to the skort). The length really depends on your preference. 2. Pin the scarf in position to the shorts and proceed to cut the scarf across the top, essentially creating a triangular piece of fabric. 3. Take the remaining scarf fabric and once again place on top of the shorts, this time on the other side of the leg. Once in position, pin and cut across the top creating the second piece of triangular fabric. 4. Start with the bottom piece and pin the top seams inward in preparation to sew the top hem. 5. Using a sewing machine, sew the top hem edge. 6. Place the piece of fabric back on top of the shorts and this time, pin the edge onto the shorts. 7. On the other side of the fabric, pin the cut edge inward. Using the sewing machine, sew the cut edge hem and then sew the scarf onto the shorts. NOTE: The reason I didn’t secure the scarf onto the shorts on both sides is because the pair of short I used had a front opening. Had I used a pair with a side or back opening, I would sew the silk scarf directly onto the shorts on all sides. 8. Take the other scarf piece, pin the one edge onto the shorts. 9. On the other edge pin inwards leaving about one to two inches away from the other side. Secure all hems with a sewing machine. 10. On the bottom piece, sew a hook closure on the loose end on the scarf as shown in the picture. This will secure your bottom piece of fabric to the short while you can still access your front open of the shorts. 11. Again, sew a hook closer on the top piece of the scarf and the shorts as shown in the picture, this will secure the top piece of fabric to the shorts – essentially creating a wrap skirt. Finished product!
Here you have it! The silk scarf is so delicate and feminine, flowing in the wind.
For those of you who have been reading my blog for some time would know that I love refashion projects. It is so great to make an old piece new again. My shorts were about to go to Salvation Army until I decided to ‘re-love’ it again. I urge you to do the same.
Here are some other refashion DIY projects – here, here, and here.
Have a wonderful day!!

I love this! It’s so sneaky, no one will know you made the skort yourself haha! Brilliant and beautiful scarf choice! 🙂
