Summer is the prime time for weddings. I just came back from Chicago celebrating my dear friend, Ashley’s wedding at the Knickerbocker Hotel. It was a fantastic time and what a great excuse to get away for a few days and explore the windy city. All the weddings and engagements this year (and a little browsing on 77 Diamonds) got me thinking about all the different diamond shapes. There are so many different types! Each having it’s distinctive character, style, and let’s be honest, not every shape is for every lady.
Isn’t it funny that women often times know so little about diamonds because men typically are the ones that do the research (I’m making a general statement of course!). Hopefully I am able to provide you with a bit of insight when it comes time to go ring shopping! Hey let’s face it, we can buy a right hand ring right?! 🙂
Round: This is a classic, round shaped diamond. This shape is the most popular and looks stunning with all types cuts and bands. The brilliant cut diamond typically have 58 facets (faces) and when the light shines through, the reflection of the many facets make this diamond cut extremely sparkly.
Oval: This is a round oval shaped diamond, slightly slimmer and longer then a round shape. Though not my personal favourite, I’ve seen many gorgeous options that are dressed with a diamond halo and double band. If Princess Kate wasn’t sporting her 18-karat sapphire, I’d see her with an oval shape.
Princess: This is a square shaped diamond and it is the second most popular diamond shape. When you look above, it loos like a square and on its side, it looks like an inverted pyramid. In my opinion, princess cut looks amazing with a simple channel setting band.
Cushion: This is a square shaped diamond with rounded corners. By far, one of my favourites! I believe this is the best of both worlds combining femininity with a slight edge (I associate round with soft, and corners with edge). The best combination is with a delicate diamond halo and a thing diamond band. I love the vintage styled cushion diamond rings. Delicious!
Radiant: This is a rectangular shaped diamond that has a brilliant diamond cut. If you’re looking for a diamond that is between cushion and princess, this is a good choice.
Emerald: This is a rectangular shaped diamond. The emerald shape diamond is very unique as the faces are like steps, stacked on top of one another and descends in size from bottom to top. This diamond looks great with side baguettes.
Asscher: This is a square shaped diamond. This is a variation of the emerald shape diamond except the faces are shaped more squared than rectangular. I would say this is a personal favourite next to the cushion. Again, looks great in a vintage style.
There are so many more shapes I haven’t covered off…
