Hi there! Happy Monday! It’s finally feeling a little wee bit more like summer in Toronto. Thought I’d start your summer off with this super easy DIY project. Definitely a project that you can make use of and I bet you also have all the materials at home ready for it!
One of the most worn items in my closet during the summer are denim shorts. I’ve got them in all shades of blue and different hem lines. Originally I was inspired to make my own denim dress from this post a week ago. I had big plans to find a men’s denim shirt and transform it to a denim dress but no luck at the Thrift Shop over the weekend. However, I was able to find a pair of jean overalls instead (surprisingly also fit me like a glove) and decided to transform them into this season’s overall/shortall trend (see here and here).
Transformation took only 10 mins, I hope you’ll give it a try with a pair of your old jeans stashed away in your closet.
This was my thrift shop find. To be honest, I would have rolled up the jeans and worn them long with heels. I lucked out with this bad boy. Proves to show that you can find lots of goodies at your local thrift shop.
- A pair of old jeans or even jean shorts that are too long
- Xacto knife, preferably a pair that are a little bit dull
- Scissors
- Cutting board or something to line your surface
1. Put your jeans on and measure to the desired length. Mark the length with a safety pin.
2. Start by cutting one leg off. I cut slightly up, creating a curved hem line. This is entirely up to you.
TIP: I’d suggest not cutting too short on your first try. It’s always better to have them longer and adjust then having them too short to start off with!
3. Once you’re done with one leg, fold the jean legs on top of each other, shown exactly as below.
4. Cut the second leg by tracing the hem for the first. Make adjustments as you need.
5. Line your jeans on a cutting board (or similar) and start creating marks with the xacto knife.
6. Keep cutting over the same mark several times until you get the pattern/hole/cuts that you want.
TIP: using a duller knife gives that rough edging.
7. Once you’ve creating all the holes/marks/cuts you want on the pant legs, work on the actual hem line to give it a rough edge.
8. Use the xacto knife and cut along the edge of the hem, go over it several times.
9. Snip some the the excess fray off with scissors (you can totally leave them hanging too!).
Here you have it. You know the coolest part of these overalls is that I can unbutton the top part, transforming them into regular shorts. I LOVE my thrift shop find!
You can also see here the effect of cutting a slight curved hem. I think it gives the illusion of longer legs. Give it a try!
Every girl needs a pair of perfect cut-off denim shorts! Why not create your own! The results look store bought and cost me next to none.
Hope you have a wonderful start of your week! It’s a busy one for me! But lots more posts coming up this week. Check back soon! xoxo
