As a coffee admirer, I’m always searching for new flavours and ways to enjoy my morning cup. It’s been several weeks since I shared a new coffee recipe and I’m eager to reveal today’s creation!
In early May, Nespresso launched Explorations 1, two exceptionally rare and distinctive limited editions of coffees originated from Kenya and Laos. Per Nespresso’s in-house coffee experts, these two extremely small batched coffees are considered ‘hidden gems’ due to their excellent taste profiles and the fact that they are Pure Origins – meaning they are sourced from a single farm or small group within a precise region.
These coffees are best enjoyed black, however, they are also great served with steamed milk as a Cappuccino or Macchiato.
Inspired by the colourful and ethic packaging of Laos Bolaven Plateau and Kenya Peaberry, I decided to take a slightly unique approach and blended them into a delicious and nutritious Coffee Smoothie. It was honestly like a match made in heaven because I was able to combine my love for coffee and my love for a cold refreshing smoothie!
The launch of Exploration 1 presented an opportunity to share the hidden and fascinating stories behind Kenya, Laos, and the coffee that these two regions offered.
Kenya has been known as the “King of Coffees” within the coffee industry. The ‘peaberry’ has often been referred to a prized bean due to its perfectly round shape, only accounting for 5% of the world’s coffee. I would say that’s pretty darn special!
The Bolaven Plateau of Southern Laos is located over a thousand meters above sea level. At this altitude, this region benefits from high rainfall, volcanic soil and special humidity that allows for the perfect coffee growing condition.
Kenya Peaberry delivers fragrant and fruity notes while the Laos Bolaven Plateau exhibits cereal and herb-like aromas. Both are fantastic enjoyed at their original brewed state or combined with smoothie must-have ingredients.
Coffee Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- 2 Explorations 1 capsules
- 1 cup milk (non-diary version works as well)
- ¼ cup oats
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- Almonds – optional
- Cinnamon – for garnish
How To: Brew 2 capsules from the Exploration 1 collection (I recommend the same). Combine all ingredients except for cinnamon in a blender or using a handheld emulsion blender. Serve chilled and garnish with almonds, banana slices, and a hint of cinnamon and enjoy!
This was my first time creating a Nespresso coffee smoothie and I was amazingly and pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was! The coffee flavour is certainly dominant and the banana adds a great thickness and smoothness to it!
I was also so glad to be introduced to two very special coffees that I’ve not tried before. Both rare, delightful and fascinating topographies.
Have you tried to coffees from Kenya or Laos before?!
