Style Tip :: Sophisticated Work Wear for Fall/Winter 2013

I want to spend today talking about office attire. I work in a pretty casual work environment. Eight years ago, I thought that was amazing. The thought of wearing jeans, t-shirts, flip flops, etc. was awesome. However, in the recent years, I’ve actually come to ‘fancy’ up my work attire. There’s something magical about dolling up in the morning and strutting down the streets of Toronto. It makes me feel… ALIVE.

During a recent discussion, many of my friends told me that their favourite season for office wear was the summer as they’re able to wear skirts and dresses without having to match them with other pieces. Oddly enough, I actually prefer office attire in the Fall/Winter. I find the rich colours and layered pieces gives it extra sophistication. Transitioning your office wardrobe from Summer to Fall/Winter is all about having the right pieces and accessories to do the job properly.

Here are few tips for your work wear for the colder months!

Dark shades are flexible

The first piece of advice I have is to invest in plenty of black, grey and dark blue items. These work perfectly with brighter colours as well as being paired together, which makes them really versatile. If you have a bright purple pencil dress that you love, you’ll still be able to wear it in the winter with a pair of black tights, and a black jacket or cardigan.

Shoes can make your outfit

My next tip is that you can instantly make any outfit better by changing your footwear. There are so many gorgeous heels out this season, but my current top choice is the range of court shoes by LK Bennett. Go to the shops to see whether a rounded or pointed toe feels more comfortable, and then buy a few heels in this shape – just vary the height of the heel and the colour of the shoe. If you can’t wear heels during your commute, leave them at work and change when you arrive, or you can do what I do … TOUGH it out 😉 

Think comfy, not frumpy

It can be so tempting to reach for the stretchy waistbands at this time of year but you can cover up without compromising on style. Look out for knitted cardigans and ponchos, and then team these up with a flattering skirt or tailored trousers. If you want to be able to wear a dress on colder days, think about putting a thin layer on underneath in a shade that compliments the colour of the garment – this way you won’t always need to wear a sweater too.

Mix and match accessories

Finally, buy a few new accessories to wear in the coming months. This is a great idea as you can buy a few key items for your wardrobe but give them totally different looks by using your accessories. My favourite pieces to buy include scarves, hosiery, belts and jewellery. A scarf can be worn around the neck, the head, the waist or just under the bust, making it really multifunctional; my advice would be to buy one “warm colour”, one “cool colour” and then a monochrome one to complete the set.
