Happy weekend! The weekend has officially arrived and boy am I glad. This week was a whirlwind with the start of my week LIVE on the Marilyn Denis Show (you can see my full segment on how to create a gorgeous outdoor garden oasis for less than $300), then followed by a week’s of business conferences. I can’t wait to kick back and relax this weekend, I think I deserve it … and so do you!
To kick off the weekend, I’m sharing a simple DIY project that you can work on – a DIY Outdoor Planter. Recently, I had the pleasure to learn all about planters and gardening with Peter Cantley, the garden guru and Vice-President, Floral & Garden and Loblaw Companies Ltd. I’m not sure about you, but I kill about any plant that lives, so I was so glad to get some expert advice on planting my own mini garden with some products from President’s Choice (be it floral or edibles). Peter taught us how to create a simple, yet attractive planter using three simple ingredients – Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers.
Read further for steps on creating your own DIY Outdoor Planter. Best of all, I’m prepping you for your gardening skills by giving away a $50 Giftcard to President’s Choice. Enter using the widget below!
The steps of building your own planter is very simple! This is what you’ll need, a planter pot (so many amazing options from PC), a bag of Premium Potting Soil, and:
Thrillers –
A plant at the center that makes a statement. I used PC’s Canna Pacific Scarlet plant for $6.99.
Spillers –
An arrangement of plants that tumble over the sides to add a dramatic effect. These are generally places around the thriller, three in a triangular fashion. I used a combination of plants as my spillers. Good options are PC ‘s Gigantico Sweet Georgia Ipomea (assortment of coloured leaves) and PC’s Lysimachia (yellowing green foliage).
Fillers –
Similar to the spillers being arranged in threes in a triangular fashion, fillers are a must to pull everything beautifully together. These are typically floral plants such as PC Gigantico Calibrachoa (which comes in an array of colours and are generally bi-colour in nature).
You can find PC’s full array of plants using their Plant Finder.
These SUPER cool Max Touch gardening gloves made exclusively for President’s Choice are totally made for bloggers and Instagramers! They are touch-screen friendly! You can now share your every green-thumb moment with your friends without taking your gloves off! $4.99 at Canadian Super Stores and Loblaws across Canada.
Two weeks later, my Scarlet is finally blooming, I can’t wait to see the it in full bloom!
I’m giving away a $50 Giftcard to President’s Choice (can be redeemed at any participating Loblaw Inc. store).

I’m obsessed with gardening this year, so this is great timing! I’m really big on ornamental grasses. They’re so pretty, easy to care for, and have a very modern feel!
I love when the warm weather comes and I love hosta plants they are beautiful and strong.
We planted some random flowers (Peonies and Hostas) and vegetables (Spinach) in our garden, but they lack cohesion and styling, some planters like the one you showed would definitely be nice additions!
I am going to plant some basil plants and a few other things I am not sure yet.
I want to see edible plants such as tomatoes and herbs.
I want to see my dark red carnations bloom – shouldn’t be too much longer.
I am interested in seeing zucchini and cucumber in my garden. Congrats on the Marilyn Denis Show tv appearance and for winning the challenge!
