I’ve always dreamt of having a Mudroom.
I’m sooooo stoked about today’s post because I’ve been working on this mudroom renovation for months now and I’m finally ready to reveal it!
When we renovated our kitchen last year, we sacrificed our entranceway closet so that we allowed enough space to move our fridge in place. It was always the plan that we would remodel our tiny “basement” into a useable mudroom.
Our barely-there basement was tucked away on the lower level of our townhome, and prior to the renovations, the room’s primary use was for the water heater, furnace, and essentially a storage space piled up with shoes and just about anything that didn’t belong on the upper floors. It was messy, cluttered, and non-functional.
After over a year, we finally tackled this mudroom project and partnered with The Home Depot Canada to make our vision come to life!
There were three must haves for our new mudroom:
- The furnace, water heater, and any exposed pipes had to be hidden
- Durable flooring as this will become our primary entryway from the garage
- Lastly, loads of useable and stylish storage space for shoes and coats
We worked with our contractors to design a solution which essentially closed off an unfinished area for the furnace and all the pipes. We then relocated the door from the original entrance and placed it in a new location that separated the unfinished area from the rest. Now that we maximized a functional area to work with, the contractors completed the room with dry wall, ceiling, pot lights, porcelain tiled floors (super durable, stain, scuff, and water resistant!), and a fresh coat of paint.
Below, are a couple of images of the space after the renovations but before we outfitted with a full storage solution.
And here is a view of the space with a little bit of added TLC from us!
Choosing our Storage Solution
Soon after the actual renovation work, next on the list was storage. We were keen on finding an option that was cost-effective and easy to install without compromising our new brightly lit space. We were so thrilled when The Home Depot Canada introduced us to the ClosetMaid Style+ Collection in their newest finishing, Coastal Teak.
First off, we loved the grey colour of this collection. Typically, ready to install organizational products are only available in standard colours such as white, black, or brown. It is rare to find options, such as grey, that generally only custom cabinetry offers.
This ClosetMaid Coastal Teak collection comes in a variety of standard sized units (i.e. towers, drawers, corner units, doors, etc.), perfect for mixing and matching to build the perfect storage system. All units are stain, scratch, and impact resistant.
Bespoke Professional Design Services from ClosetMaid
Though we had made the decision to move forward with this collection, we were a little intimidated and overwhelmed by all the design and product options that were available to us. Since we had waited an entire year to work on this project, we wanted to make sure that we loved the final design of the space.
We knew we needed a little be of extra help to get us to the finish line.
We utilized ClosetMaid’s Professional Design Services to assist us in outfitting our space. By signing up to this service for a $5 fee, ClosetMaid designed a solution that fit our needs, preferences, and dimension. Unlike self-guided online design tools, a professional storage specialist was assigned to us and created a plan and provided a corresponding list of recommended ClosetMaid products for us to purchase. The output from this service was a design plan (drawing that displayed our floor plan, the storage units, and elevations) and a full product list in which we subsequently placed an order for.
We really enjoyed this experience. It was simple, effective and customized. The ClosetMaid specialist worked with us on making a round of revisions to the original design to ensure that everything was the perfect fit.
DIY Installation
The products arrived in just a matter of days and each unit was equipped with all the hardware and instructions we required for easy installation. Kyle and I set aside one weekend afternoon and managed to assemble and install all the towers and shelving with no tears and arguing! Isn’t that a bonus?! 🙂
To further customize these standard units, I replaced the standard hardware pulls with Contemporary Metal Pulls. We also furnished the shelves with plenty of wire baskets for extra storage needs.
Products Shown: ClosetMaid Style+ 5ft – 9ft Standard Closet Kit Coastal Teak x 2 / ClosetMaid Style+ 4ft – 9ft Narrow Closet Kit Coastal Teak (installed as two half units side by side) / ClosetMaid Style+ Shaker Doors Coastal Teak x 2 / ClosetMaid Style+ 10 Inch Narrow Shaker Drawer Coastal Teak x 2 / Live Edge Bench c/o Ontario Wood / Full length mirror from Structube
We are so incredibly happy about the result of this remodel project and my dream coming to life! This room, once disorganized and unusable is now a place we can store all our (and when I mean our, I mean my) shoes and coats.
Thanks for following along with my mini renovation projects and if you have any questions at all feel free to reach out or leave me a comment!
Disclaimer: A super special thanks for The Home Depot Canada and ClosetMaid for working with me on this. All design, ideas, and opinions are my own.
