Gone are the days when I can function with just a few hours of sleep. I need at least a solid seven to eight hours of snooze (nine on the weekends please!), otherwise, I feel cranky, exhausted, and well, the brain just doesn’t operate at an optimal level. Consequently, pretty much nothing gets done.
Aside from getting enough shuteye time to increase productivity, there are also many other factors that determine whether I’m about to have a great night of rest or not. Personally, I can gulp an entire cup of coffee before bed and sleep like a baby, but when it comes to tea, forget about it, I’ll toss and turn for hours!
Comfort is also a huge contributing factor. Room too hot or too cold? Or perhaps pillow is too soft or too stiff? Or your mattress is way past it’s lifespan and giving you all sorts of pains and aches? Not only do these factors interrupt the way you sleep, but if not taken care of early, may leave you with long term distress.
Over the past several months, I’ve been experiencing backpains in the morning. After weeks of being in denial, and observing my sleep patterns in hotels and such, Kyle finally managed to convince me to consider a new mattress.
Purchasing a new mattress can be quite intimidating, I mean where do you even start?
I was interested in a memory foam mattress and grateful that my friends at Tempur-pedic Canada offered me some guidance and encouraged me to come up with my must-haves, before drilling down to the product level.
GOODBYE BACK PAINS
Since my whole mattress shopping journey began with my annoying back pains, solving this problem was my number one priority. What that meant was I needed to look for something which provided me with proper spinal alignment, great support but not compromising comfort.
I’ve never owned a memory foam mattress before but have heard from many friends and family that it’s life changing. I was excited to explore the TEMPUR Adapt technology, said to differ from other memory foams which typically compresses under your weight rather than conforming to your shape, maximizing the opportunity to personalize spinal support and comfort.
In addition, this TEMPUR material provides a ‘slow melt’ feeling, so that as you move and adjust your sleep position, it’ll continue to hug your body throughout the night.
THE WINE TEST
For you single folks out there, this may be less concerning as you can sprawl out like a starfish with no complaints. However, if you’re sharing a bed with someone nearly double your size (ahem!), the wine test becomes so important! The last thing I want to experience at 3:00 a.m. is the rumbling feeling of a mini elephant rolling around in my bed.
The TEMPUR material is said to reduce motion transfer, which means you’re free to do your happy dance on your mattress while you rest your Friday night’s wine glass before tuning into Netflix.
NO COLD (OR HOT) SWEATS
Kyle and I often ‘debate’ about the perfect room temperature. He’s always too hot and I’m always too cold. Finding a mattress that provides temperature control would be awesome. In addition to adapting to shape and sizes, the TEMPUR Adapt technology also response to temperature. The large surface areas between the windows of the cells in the mattress allows for heat to move through and out, and away from the body.
After doing some more research and seeking additional advice from Tempur-pedic Canada, we did manage to bring home our new beloved mattress by applying our must-have wish list and finding the suitable level of TEMPUR-ADAPT and TEMPUR Feel (firmness/softness). Mattress shopping doesn’t have to be intimidating after all!
I’ll be sharing my new sleep experience in a few weeks, so please check back (there will also be a fun bedroom remodel surprise!).
