Though this little boy is still growing in my belly, I already feel all sorts of mom feels! I’m mentally and emotionally preparing myself for mom life and so, even though he’s not quite ready to say hello to the world yet, this Mother’s Day is a special one because it’s one that is preparing me for motherhood and therefore, definitely worth celebrating.
I partnered with Joe Fresh for Mother’s Day to “Free My Fresh” and pick up a new skill before the arrival of our little one, because I mean… who knows how much time I’ll have by then! I’ve always wanted to learn the techniques of hand lettering and calligraphy properly. And since I’m starting to plan out the nursery, this would be just the opportunity to create a piece of hand lettering wall art for our nugget.
I invited Sylvia of Via Calligraphy to give me a private lesson in our home last weekend. I met Sylvia a few years ago before she started her Calligraphy business. Let me tell you, she’s a girl boss! Marketer by day and creative by night. I can definitely relate. She is known for #TheJustMarriedJacket, you’ve got to check it out if you haven’t!
Sylvia runs several group Calligraphy Classes in Toronto and can also facilitate private sessions. Her classes cover all the basics in hand lettering and supplies required. In merely two hours I was able to start with basic strokes and then eventually create a fun piece for the nursery.
I learned about the techniques, drawing directions, applying the right pressure, differences between various pens/tools used to achieve styles of lettering, and most importantly was able to practice, practice, practice!
I always had a knack when it came to arts and crafts. I mean I am a DIY-er at heart! But I’m definitely a hacker rather than a true artist, creating something totally unique and from scratch. With the techniques that Sylvia shared with me, I’m confident that I can now create hand lettering art on my own without too much guidance and perhaps overtime be able to integrate my own ‘flare’ and style of lettering! I’m sure I will be getting some requests from friends for wedding seating charts and baby shower signs soon! LOL
This piece will definitely be framed and put up in the babe’s room and will always remind me of how I celebrated my first unofficial Mother’s Day.
